One of China’s oldest and most beloved fantasy novels, Journey to the West has delighted billions of children for 500 years. My own grandfather regaled me with its stories when I was young and even fired up my budding imagination by pretending to be the novel’s main character, the Monkey King Sun Wukong. Somehow, despite inspiring countless anime, live action dramas and movies, and even video game characters, it remains relatively unknown in the west.

So in mid-2019, my friend James Young and I set out to change that with Journey to the West: The Podcast, covering a chapter a week, with visuals and further commentary available at our site: journeytothewestcast.com.

The podcast has received fan mail, engaged scholarship and a growing community of subscribers every week. In the process, I gained sound editing skills and a reason to catch up with some old friends.
